Considering the cost. Making a living and staying debt free while purchasing or building a home.

One of the only debts Dave Ramsey financial advisor and wealth building coach allows is a home loan even then with some stipulations not to be burdened for a prolonged period of time. Debt leaves us as a slave as Dave Ramsey often points out. As it is stated in the Proverbs of Solomon “the borrower is servant to the lender”.

Buying a home is no doubt a big investment one not to be taken lightly. It requires careful planning and budgeting. Jesus uses an example of a man in Luke 14:28-30, this man sat down and counted the cost of his tower before proceeding in order to be certain he had sufficient funds to finish. Otherwise Jesus tells us the outcome as this man with insufficient funds lays the foundation only to find he could not finish. What then will those who see his unfinished work do? They will mock him of course! I’ve often seen a partially constructed home traveling throughout the state and have wondered, “now why’d they start that?” Has this ever happened to you? I’m sure you’ve seen these homes and buildings also. There are an increasing number of articles about newly built million dollar homes being torn down over failure to obtain building permits. Did these builders sit down and diligently consider the cost of the building permits and then just simply ignore the fact they never obtained them?

Now for you future home buyer, Have you sat down and considered the cost of your purchase? I’d like to think you’ve planned your budget, you have examined the cost of the insurance, you have evaluated new furnishings for your family. Have you considered the age of your roof? Will your septic system need an upgrade? How is your wiring? If you haven’t scheduled a home inspection for your prospective new home I must point out you have not yet diligently considered the cost of this purchase. For mere fractions of the purchase price you could have obtained the needed information required consider the costs by having a home inspection.

Solomon tells is in Proverbs 24:27 “Prepare thy work without, and make fit for thyself in the field; and afterwards build thine house.” Summed up as get a job, make some money, then consider the cost of your home, before buying or building your home.

While you are considering the cost of your potential purchase I implore you to diligently consider the cost of a life without accepting Christ Jesus as your savior. “There is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.” Acts 4:12 Without Christ there is only eternal damnation, a much worse fate than some miscalculations on a home purchase. Jesus says “Behold, I stand at the door, and knock; if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.” Revelation 3:20
